Epidaurus
At a distance of only 47 kilometers from “Mare e Pietra”, you reach the historical Theater of Ancient Epidaurus which operates with Theater Performances even today. Epidaurus is the most important ancient place of worship of the god Asklepios. Since 1988 it belongs to the world cultural heritage of UNESCO. The ancient theater of Epidaurus was built in the 4th BC. century and is considered one of the best-preserved ancient theaters in the world.
It is built on the western slope of Kynortios Mountain. It is located near today’s Lygourio of Argolis and belongs to the Municipality of Epidaurus. It is considered the most perfect ancient Greek theater in terms of acoustics and aesthetics.
It originally had 34 rows and then, during Roman times, it was expanded with an additional 21 rows, with a total capacity of 15,000 spectators. The theater is known for its acoustics, providing all spectators, regardless of seat, with perfect hearing.
Theatrical performances, as part of the organized festival, began in 1954 and from the following year (1955) were established as an annual institution for the presentation of ancient drama.
In addition, a scientific study published in 2007 by the Georgia Institute of Technology proved that the amazing acoustics are the result of an advanced design system, which works as follows: rows of limestone seats filter low-frequency sounds and amplify high-frequency sounds, so that the whispers of the spectators die down and the voices of the actors intensify.
