Nafplio
In just about an hour from Mare e Pietra, you will be looking down on Nafplion. Tiled roofs, gray stone, turquoise sea. The famous Bourtzi, Akronafplia, Palamidi. A beautiful city. Castles and neoclassical buildings, old neighborhoods, pedestrian streets, and large squares. The “Naples of the East” of the Venetians, was the first official capital of Greece in 1828. A city where you will want to stay forever. In the heart of the old town of Nafplion, you will start a journey into the latest history of Greece: in one of the most central parts of the city, you will see Syntagma Square, surrounded by historical buildings: the Trianon, the building of the Archaeological Museum and the National Bank, made in the interwar period.
In the surrounding streets, you will discover the first Parliament of the Greeks, the church of Agios Spyridon outside which I. Kapodistrias was murdered in 1831 and opposite the city’s only hammam. Two other squares, of Agios Georgios and of the Three Admirals, have interesting monuments and mansions around them.
